How Long Does It Take to Train a Dog

New dog owners and those who have had their canine companions for a while often want to know just how long it is going to take to train their dogs. Of course, there is no hard and fast answer to this question. There are a lot of variables. The only real answer is that it will take as long as it takes and not a moment less.

This is because all dogs are different. If you have owned or at least been around multiple dogs in your life, you know that they are truly different from one another. We’re not just talking about different breeds either. Even dogs of the same breed can have vastly different personalities and histories. This means they are going to learn differently.

However, there are some training commonalities you can keep in mind.

Be Patient

This is one of the most important things you have to remember. You can’t rush the training and be upset when your dog doesn’t understand certain commands. Some dogs will understand the concept of sit, stay, and much more in a couple of days. Others could take weeks or longer to get this. You need to be just as patient with your pets as you would with your kids.

Consistency Is Essential

One of the reasons that so many dogs seem to forget the things they have learned when they were in training is because owners aren’t consistent. For a dog to be properly trained, whether it’s behavioral commands or tricks, things need to be consistent. This means several things.

First, it means that you need to reinforce the training regularly if you hope for your dog to “get it” and remember it.

Consistency also refers to the way they are trained. You can’t suddenly change up command words and expect them to understand. You can’t have one family member have one method of training and you have another method if you want it to work. Be consistent across the board.
