Tips & Tricks for your dog

How to Prepare Your Dog for Summer Adventures

Summer is the perfect season for patio lunches, beach days, and weekends on the water. But wherever you go, your dog’s behavior goes with you. A well-trained dog is welcome almost anywhere, while an unprepared dog can turn a fun outing into a stressful experience.

The good news? A little training goes a long way.

Practice Patio Manners

Pet-friendly patios are great places to enjoy time with your dog, but they require good manners. Before heading out, your dog should be comfortable with basic commands like sit, stay, and loose-leash walking. One of the most useful skills is a reliable “place” command. Your dog should be able to settle quietly beside your table instead of begging for food or greeting every passerby. Bring water, choose a shaded area, and reward calm behavior throughout the meal.

Prepare for the Beach

The beach can be exciting and overwhelming. New smells, people, dogs, and wildlife create distractions that challenge even well-behaved dogs. A strong recall command is essential before allowing your dog off leash in approved areas. Start with shorter visits and gradually build your dog’s confidence.

Always follow local leash laws, clean up after your dog, and monitor for signs of overheating.

Stay Safe on the Boat

Boating introduces a completely different environment. Before your first trip, let your dog explore the boat while it’s docked and reward calm behavior.

Every dog should wear a properly fitted canine life jacket while on the water. Teaching a designated resting spot can also help your dog stay relaxed and safe during the ride.

Focus on Calm Behavior

Commands are important, but self-control is equally valuable. Before exiting the car, greeting people, or exploring a new area, ask your dog for a simple behavior such as a sit or eye contact. These small moments help your dog stay focused and confident, even in exciting environments.

Summer Success Starts with Training

The dogs that enjoy patios, beaches, and boats the most are not necessarily the smartest—they are the ones that have practiced their skills around distractions.
