There are all kinds of considerations to think about before bringing a new puppy or adult dog into your home. Proper food and attention, as well as plenty of exercise are all very important. Many people don’t take the time to think about everything that is involved with owning a dog before getting one. They simply take one look at that cute face and tiny, furry body and fall in love.
Unfortunately, people who adopt pets in this manner often find themselves down the road with less time to take care of some of the responsibilities of being a pet owner, one of which being the importance of training. For the purposes of today’s post in particular, we will be looking at leash training. And, more specifically, the risks that can come from not teaching your dog how to use one.
This is probably the biggest concern of most pet owners who have difficulty with their dog when leashed. Darting out in front of a car or getting in a fight with another dog are two common ways pups can get hurt when not on a leash.
Dogs that are walking free are also in danger of getting lost by running off. You never know when something irresistible to your dog may come across its path during a walk. A cat, squirrel, rabbit or some other animal may present a temptation too great for your dog to ignore.
Perhaps the worst possibility of all that may come about as a result of your dog not being properly leash trained is that they could have a violent episode with another person. Even if your dog isn’t naturally aggressive, there is no telling how they may react when separated from you.
