Just like us, dogs need exercise to stay healthy and happy. While dogs of all ages need plenty of exercise to maintain a healthy weight, have proper digestion, and improve range of motion, puppies can benefit even more from consistent exercise. If you haven’t noticed it already, your puppy has a lot of energy to burn. Without a healthy outlet to burn all of that curious energy, your puppy can quickly turn destructive.
You may notice more behaviors like barking, nipping or chewing when your pup hasn’t had enough physical or mental exercise throughout the day. You may even notice that potty training is a bit easier when exercise is a part of your puppy’s daily routine. However, you may feel a bit bored with your typical neighborhood walk every day. Spice up your exercise routine with a few of our tips and tricks.
Your puppy needs a daily walk. Not only does a brisk walk give your puppy the chance to move his body, but the walk also allows for socialization and practice with leash manners. However, both you and your puppy can get bored if you are always taking the same route. Spice things up by switching it up and going in the opposite direction or making a few new turns. You’ll both appreciate the change of scenery
If you have a big backyard, playing fetch is another excellent way for puppies to exercise. Not only will they have fun running around, but they are also working on obedience and building a relationship with you.
Some breeds of dogs love to be in the water! Get your puppy out there to become comfortable with the water and learn basic safety boundaries.
Did you know that puppies can burn their extra energy by practicing obedience? It’s true – your puppy concentrates hard during obedience practice, especially when there are distractions. A good 20-minute obedience session can tucker your pup right out!
