How to Incorporate Obedience Practice In Your Day

Getting a brand-new puppy can be such an exciting time for the whole family. It is important to understand that it might not be all fun and games at first though. Making sure your new buddy is trained properly not only makes your life easier, but it helps them out tremendously. Proper training doesn’t happen overnight, and it is important to be consistent with your training. Obedience training can be fun as well, giving you and your dog the opportunity to bond during practice sessions.

Routines Make All the Difference

Trying to be consistent every day with training practice can be difficult. It is easy to get caught up in your day to day routine and forget that your furry friend needs this structure in their lives too. The best way to make sure you keep your training routine is to work into something you would be doing anyway.

When you put a leash on your dog, make him Sit first, and then Stay or Wait. They know they will be rewarded with a walk and will learn that these commands lead to something they want. The same goes for feeding time, make them Sit first. This way they understand they must follow your instructions to get that precious kibble. These simple additions to everyday actions don’t take up very much time but can make all the difference in how quickly your dog can be trained.

You can also practice obedience during staples of your personal daily routine. Put your dog in a Down position while you put on your makeup or get dressed for the workday. A Place command is perfect for when you are sitting down for dinner or to attend a conference call.

Training is Forever

Just because Fido can sit on command doesn’t mean the training ends there. Proper training is a lifelong job. It is important though to remember it doesn’t have to be done at once. Picking out certain commands to work on each day or week can help mix things up.

Getting frustrated can sometimes be a common complaint during obedience daily practice that isn’t routine-based. Being overwhelmed or frustrated will only make things harder for you both. Fortunately, when you invest in professional training, you can just focus on the upkeep and practice throughout your day, leaving you (and your dog) less frustrated and ready to build a better relationship.
