The sunshine and warmer temperatures can only mean one thing: it’s beach and boat time here in South Carolina! If you are planning on making your dog a constant companion on the water, it is crucial to brush up on your family’s safety rules and expectations. Here are a few ways to make sure your dog is safe in the water this season.

Brush Up on Important Commands

When you are near the water, whether strolling on the beach or paddling your kayak, you must be confident that your dog will obey your commands. Your dog should be an expert at commands like Sit and Stay in high distraction environments so that you can be sure he will not get himself into dangerous situations. Before you hit the beach or jump in the boat, make extra time to practice Sit and Stay until you both have it down perfectly.

Get the Right Gear

Your dog, no matter how great of a swimmer, should have some gear to keep him safe when you are in the water. Invest in a flotation vest that fits securely, is not cumbersome, and that has a handle you can grab to help your dog out of the water. You can also purchase a few floating toys your dog can play fetch with while you are on the water, as well as food and water bowls for a midday snack.

Swim with Caution

Swimming is an excellent source of exercise for your dog. However, just like humans, dogs can overexert themselves in the water and not realize it until it is too late. Make sure you are giving your dog plenty of rest breaks throughout the day.

Still Stop for Walks

Just because you will be on a boat or kayak does not mean you can skip bringing your dog’s leash. You’ll need to take a few walking breaks throughout the course of your day so that your dog can release some stress, stretch his legs, and go to the bathroom. Bring along a leash so that it is always handy when you are enjoying the water.

Have an Emergency Plan

Finally, have a family plan so that everyone knows what to do in case your dog ends up in the water (in an emergency). Know who will jump in to get the dog out and who needs to assist with getting everyone safely back inside the boat. Practice a few times too so that everyone feels comfortable with their role and so that your dog is comfortable with being saved.
