Keeping Your Dog Safe in the Charleston Heat

Summer weather is certainly here! While many of us love the longer daylight hours and more chances to sneak out to the beach after work, the hot temperatures bring a few extra dangers to consider when you are planning your dog’s next outing. Just like humans, dogs can overheat and experience serious health consequences due to extreme temperatures. Keep your dog safe, while still having fun, in the summer heat with a few of our tips and tricks.

Stay Out of the Car

First and foremost, it is important to remember to never leave your dog alone in a car during these hot months. Your car, even with windows cracked, heats up quickly and can turn into an oven in a matter of minutes. Don’t leave your dog in your car, even for just a minute. Instead, plan to hit the grocery store on the way home from work instead of on the way home from the dog park or opt for a dog friendly restaurant when Fido is along for the ride.

Don’t Forget the Water

Dogs can become dehydrated in the summer heat, just like humans can. In order to keep your dog healthy, never leave home without water and a bowl. We love using collapsible bowls because they are simple to tuck in a backpack or glove compartment, but you can also just grab a plastic bowl from your Tupperware drawer to keep in your car so your dog can drink easier on the go. You can also take advantage of dog friendly businesses that keep water bowls accessible on the sidewalk.

Adjust Your Walk Time

However, in the summertime months, we often find that we need to adjust our walking time to best suit our dogs. Try walking early in the morning or in the late evening when temperatures and humidity drop. If your dog seems like he is struggling, shorten your walks and focus on some extra training time in the air conditioning once you are back home.

Remember Water Safety

If your dog’s summer plans include time in the water, it is wise to reassess water safety. Make sure your dog is a strong swimmer for your plans, or invest in a life jacket to keep him safe. It is also wise to practice your Come commands on land and in the water, to assure your dog is safe no matter where you will be this summer.
